Florida taxes

No state personal income tax; county surtaxes and the property assessment still matter when comparing locations.

Scope: personal income, investments, retirement and consumption taxesCurrent rules checked October 1, 2026

Year-specific amounts are labeled separately. This overview does not reproduce every bracket, credit, local levy or business tax.

Personal income

Florida does not impose a personal income tax, so there is no Florida personal income tax return requirement. Businesses may have separate filing requirements. [1]

Investments and retirement

Florida’s absence of personal income tax also applies to an individual’s retirement and investment income. Federal income tax and obligations in another state remain separate matters. [1]

Sales and use tax

Florida’s general state sales tax rate is 6%, with different rates for certain transactions. A county discretionary sales surtax may also apply; use the state guidance for the transaction and county rather than assuming every purchase is taxed at 6%. [2]

Property tax

Property tax is administered locally. Check the county property appraiser’s assessed value and the tax collector’s bill. Homestead and other exemptions depend on eligibility and application rules. [3]
