Do not send a second return simply because a mailed return is not showing online. The IRS specifically tells taxpayers who have already filed not to file again. Check your mailing evidence and, if you expect a refund, enter the correct tax year, filing status and exact refund amount in Where’s My Refund.

Paper-return refund information generally becomes available about four weeks after mailing. Processing can take longer, especially if the return needs corrections or special handling. The IRS says to contact it when the tool directs you to, or when more than six weeks have passed since mailing a paper return. Calling and resubmitting are different steps: follow any specific IRS instructions rather than sending another copy to speed processing.
