I started freelancing late in the year. Are the earlier estimated-tax due dates automatically treated as missed payments?

Not automatically. The federal annualized income installment method can calculate required estimated-tax installments using the period in which uneven income was actually received. That can matter when freelance or other nonwage income begins late in the year instead of arriving evenly from January onward.

First determine whether estimated payments are required under the current-year threshold and safe-harbor rules. If you use the annualized method, the 2026 Form 1040-ES instructions say to file Form 2210, including Schedule AI, with the 2026 return even if the calculation produces no penalty.
